Welcome To The Official Website Of The

Jones Cemetery

The Cemetery And This Site Are Operated By The

Jones Cemetery Association

We are a non-profit, volunteer organization who, for the past few years,
have made a concentrated effort to maintain and upgrade this historic neighborhood cemetery.

We follow in the footsteps of a small but dedicated group of people who, over the past one hundred years or so,
worked hard to insure that this cemetery would remain a vital part of the community.

Many of those dedicated few have passed on.
We are striving to do them proud by bringing the Jones Cemetery into the 21st Century
in the best condition we can manage.

The Jones Cemetery is located in a quiet country setting near Trumansburg, New York
on Bower Rd./Boyd Hill Rd. in Schuyler County and the Town of Hector.

We welcome any information you may have that will help us build this site.
We especially need history items and links to other cemetery and/or genealogy sites.

The History Of The Cemetery

The Jones Cemetery has been in existence since the early 1800's.
The earliest documented grave was opened in 1835.

There are many war veterans buried here, including a Revolutionary War soldier.
The American Legion post from nearby Trumansburg decorates the veterans' graves with flags every Memorial Day.

Many old family names from the Trumansburg, Perry City, Reynoldsville,
Mecklenburg and Hector areas are well represented here.

The Task Ahead Of Us

The year 1999 found the cemetery nearly full with only a few usable plots available for purchase.
However in 2002, an exciting new development allowed the cemetery to expand and be cared for well into the next century.
We have acquired approximately 2.5 acres adjacent to the current cemetery to be developed for the expansion of the cemetery.

The land is in the process of being cleared, drained, and graded.
This will be a monumental task that, once completed, will
guarantee space for new graves for generations to come.

To that end we have mounted a fund-raising campaign.

In the recent past we have relied on volunteer help to maintain the cemetery.
Few small cemeteries could afford to carry the Worker's Compensation Insurance mandated by the State of New York!

In tribute to our volunteers, the cemetery hasn't looked this good in years!
Thanks to all who have lent a hand! It is greatly appreciated!
As our volunteers know, it doesn't take long for nature to reclaim a neglected cemetery.
We are currently winning the battle but keeping the cemetery from resembling a hayfield is an ongoing struggle,
so we can use all the help we can get!
